hell的基本意思是“地狱”,前面通常不加任何冠词。引申表示“极端痛苦的境地,受苦受难的地方,极不愉快的经历”,其前可加不定冠词。有时hell还可用作感叹词,表示愤怒、惊讶或用以加强语气。
a hell of是强烈表达法,可以指“极好”,也可指“极坏”。
the hell可表示“到底,究竟”,主要用在what,where,when,who,how之后,相当于on earth，表示一种强烈的语气。
